Rashad Hauter, now a
premed student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, won the
Henderson and N. C. East Optimist Oratorical Contest early in his high
school career. Here are his observations on the experience:
"The benefits I gained from
participating in the Optimist Oratorical contest are both innumerous and
priceless. My oratory skills have been improved greatly since I first
participated in the eighth grade. I have become accustomed to speaking in
front of large crowds and eloquently and successfully elaborating on
whatever I am orating. These skills have proved to be beneficial throughout
my academic career in high school and college. Possessing the skill of
powerful oration is very important for successfully persuading an audience
as a salesperson; efficiently presenting research as a student; and
productively leading a nation as a leader.
"Ultimately, public speaking is necessary
for success in many fields. From my experience, I have found that my
experience with the Optimist Oratorical Contest has provided me with the
experience of oratory that will benefit throughout my life."
