PROMISSORY NOTES

August - 2009

Summer is almost gone and football and soccer have begun. Remember to keep tabs on the NVHS Concessions schedules and show-up or phone a friend!!!!!!!! --- (or both).

 MEMBERSHIP MEETING - AUGUST 11

Attendance at the meeting by our Scholarship Recipients was the program for the evening. Jon Dorsey introduced Aaron Hargrove from Northern Vance High School.

Aaron introduced his guest, Ms. Bullock, who attended with him, and then informed us that he will attend Morehouse University in Atlanta next year to begin course work that will lead him to medical school.

Unfortunately the other Scholarship Recipient, Athena Duke, was not present at the meeting.

 BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

The Board met briefly after the August 11 and 25 meetings but did not hold a regular meeting in August.

A huge welcome to J.H. Hamm and Linwood Newton, our newest members. J.H. is sponsored by Kathie Harris. Linwood’s sponsor is Zach Ayscue. We are delighted to have you fellows helping work for the youth!!

We regret to report that George Allen and Jan Peek have resigned from the Club.

 MEMBERSHIP MEETING – AUGUST 25

The August 25 meeting consisted of gathering at the NVHS football concession stands for clean-up. Since Fred and Leonard had worked so diligently for days prior to the clean-up, we had more Optimists than we had items that needed cleaning – Amazing!!!!!!!!

Fred and Leonard have things off to a great start including adding a refrigerator donated by Kay’s Mom. Thanks to her - and great job Fred and Leonard!!

Following concession stands’ cleaning the group headed to Skipper’s Bar-B-Q for a good meal. Their staff really responded well to an unannounced group of about 25.

 UPCOMING EVENTS

Note: For the September 8th meeting:

Raffle for two tickets for the entire Henderson Community Concert Season. Five performances including one by the outstanding North Carolina Symphony Orchestra!  The first Community concert will be held on Monday, September 14, 2009.

September 22 Installation of new officers – spouses/significant others invited – Henderson Country Club.

 MEMBER NEWS

Congratulations to Kathie Harris and J. H. Hamm on their engagement.

(Kathie says that at Kiwanis they announced that J.H. had “popped the question” and someone asked “What was the question?”  At Optimist [along with J.H.] we were more concerned with “What was the answer?”)

Ron Dorsey retires from the work-a-day world on August 31st having been associated with Dorsey and Associates Accountants for more than a few years. (This writer remembers Ron being invited to join the Optimists when Christmas trees were sold at Dabney Dr. 66 Service Station – the trees were shipped in by railroad car from New York and looked more like sticks than trees). Congratulations Ron on long and faithful service, both to your profession and to the Optimist Club.

 CELEBRATING BIRTHDAYS IN SEPTEMBER:

Kay Ayscue

Jerry Delbridge

Cheryl Elman

Bob Hubbard

If someone declares that he is able to do everything at sixty that he was able to do at twenty, then he was not doing very much when he was twenty!
