About the Henderson Optimist Club
The Henderson
Optimist Club was organized and chartered on December 18, 1962, by 35
Henderson men, headed by Mr. Luther Hughes. The Henderson Club was directed
and aided by the Durham Optimist Club. The Henderson Club was originally
formed as a breakfast club with Mr. Ed White as the Charter President. Ed
White was a charter members of the club and is still
a member of the Club.
The old Vance Hotel was the original meeting place for the Club. There were
several more meeting places with the Holiday Inn being the last meeting
place before the Club purchased a building and land on Ruin Creek Road. The
Club property was purchased in August, 1980, from a disbanded church. Since
the building and and property were purchased, many improvements were m bathroom, two offices, and a large meeting room were constructed in
the original building. In 1987, Central Baptist Church, a newly formed
church, needed a place to hold services. The Optimist Club building was
rented to the church and both the church and the club used the building
until May, 1988, when the church purchased the building from the Club. Thus,
a new chapter of history began for the Optimist Club of Henderson. The club
now meets the second and fourth Tuesday nights at The Wildflower Restaurant
on Garnett St. in downtown Henderson.
